Valentine's Day Traditions

Valentine's Day traditions are not as important as Christmas ones, but are still important. Why? Because, like with any holiday, traditions originate memories. And memories are important so that our loved ones feel a sense of relationship and stability.

We probably all can name distinct Valentine's Day traditions that we have participated in. And that's good - traditions vary as much as the people who keep them. I would like to share with you some of our traditions that have carried on from year to year.

Valentine

When I was growing up, our family would make or write out cards for each other. There were six of us in our family and we would regain all of our cards and put them into a "Valentines box" which was made by one of us. It consisted of a quarterly box of some sort that we had lying colse to and we decorated it with construction paper hearts and writing.

Then, after dinner, we would all sit colse to the table and open the box. We handed out the Valentine's Day cards to the recipients and enjoyed each other's creations. It is a great memory of my childhood.

Our own family carried on that tradition when my kids were younger. We made our own Valentines box and put in cards that we had made or written out to each other. Of course, now there are so many pre-made Valentines that come with 20-30 in a box, that many times we just used those. But we all the time picked out the suitable picture and saying for each family member.

We have also all the time made a extra meal on Valentine's Day. That has been one of our traditions that everyone has enjoyed. It might be lasagna, pizza or someone else specialty that we don't make every day (or even every week) but that everyone likes.

Now that my kids are both older, it is commonly just my husband and I who eat the extra meal together (well, many times our miniature dog joins us!) But even though Valentine's Day has changed over the years, I think the traditions are still important to carry on. We no longer have a "box" to hold our cards, but we still buy cards for each other that express our sentiments on this important "love day."

What are your Valentine's Day traditions? Keep them as long as you can and treasure them. Your kids might just carry them on with their own families, as I did with ours!
